Wilson County wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Histoplasmosis
It is a lung infection that is caused by a fungus called Histoplasma.

Causes
When contaminated soil or droppings are disturbed, they release microscopic fungal spores into the air. Breathing the contaminated air can cause infection. Such spores are usually found in places where bats or birds are either roosting or have roosted. For example, places such as parks, chicken coops, barns, caves, etc. One can catch histoplasmosis more than once. But the first time is usually most severe. This fungus is not contagious and doesn't spread from person to person.

Symptoms
Most of the times, the people infected with histoplasmosis show no symptoms. But the risk of such infection increases if you continue to breathe the spores. Usually, the symptoms show ten days after the infection hits. Possible symptoms are:
  • Joint pain
  • A dry cough
  • Red bumps on the shin
  • Fever
  • Chest pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Excessive sweating
  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath

Types

Acute: Acute, also called short histoplasmosis is typically mild and doesn't lead to complications. According to the center of disease control and prevention, 60-90 percent of people who are residing in areas where the fungus is present have been exposed to the infection.

Chronic: Chronic, also called long-term histoplasmosis occurs less than acute histoplasmosis. Sometimes it can spread throughout the body. If left untreated, it can be life-threatening. Usually, the people with impaired immune systems are exposed to the infection. In places where the fungus is abundant, the CDC says that it can affect up to 30 percent of people with HIV.

Testing and diagnosing Histoplasmosis
Usually, histoplasmosis test is for people who have chronic infection or live or work in a highly exposed area. In the mild cases, the symptoms may not even show. Blood or urine test will be conducted.  If there are proteins or other antibodies that have had contact with the fungus, the diagnosis will be confirmed. Urine, sputum or blood cultures may also be taken for a more accurate diagnosis. In other parts of your body are affected then the doctor will take tissue samples of your liver, skin, lung or bone marrow. X-ray or CT scan of your chest may also be needed.

Prevention
Even though it is difficult to prevent disease entirely, steps can be taken to reduce the risk of infection. Avoid activities that increase the risk of exposure. For example, activities such as raising pigeons or chickens or cave exploring. Before digging into soil or area which can house the histoplasmosis causing fungus, make sure to spray it with water. This way the spores won't be released into the air. Use an effective respirator mask to provide decent protection from exposure. For the sake of better knowing which mask is appropriate for your level of exposure, you may contact the national institute for occupational safety and health.
